One Sunday a friend video called me while she was out walking.
Tears running down her face, I could see she was extremely upset.
What’s wrong I asked?
Between sobs she explained her dilemma.
“I’m 40 years old and I don’t know what I’m going to do.
The restaurant job that I’ve been away from for more than a year, because of the pandemic, is a dead end job.
I don’t know if they are going to open back up and if they do I don’t know if they are going to call me back.
I don’t know if I want to go back to work there but I’m not qualified to do anything else. I didn’t go to college.
I’m terrified. I dread looking for another job like that.”
She was clearly feeling conflicted and frustrated.
I told her to calm down. Things have a way of appearing worse than they are.
Of course she would find another job if she had to. It would take time and patience.
First she would have to look at her interest and skills and decide what she really wanted to do.
I asked her if she ever consider working for herself and if she was aware of the many online opportunities?
What was she good at? Did she have a hobby? Would she consider a training program? What side jobs had she done in her life?
She was listening intently. I watched as a faint smile emerged on her face, followed by a quiet calm that slowly settled over her.
Finally, she said she would have to discuss things with her husband but she thought she would like to embrace her life long dream and start a catering service.
She loves food and cooking, she is familiar with food handling rules and regulations and as the result of many years working as a waitress, she is an expert at customer service.
She said “going forward, for the first time I feel I am ready to step out on faith and take full control of my life, with no one telling me when to come and go.”
The moral of this story is regardless of your age, gender or occupation, when you feel overwhelmed and stuck, talk with someone. It’s important to remember that goals are not set in stone. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and it’s okay to change your goals along the way. Whether it’s due to a change in circumstances, a shift in priorities, or simply a change of heart, you always have the option to adjust your goals to better align with your current situation and desires. Don’t be afraid to reassess your goals and make changes as needed – it’s a natural part of the journey towards success.
